Yeah, let me have it...I skipped a day! It's been a while since I didn't publish something on a day. My little 4 day break flew by, and I cannot believe that it is over already. Yes, my break is over, but that is ok. I'm not as rested as I would have liked, but oh well, we can't have everything now can we?

All break I thought of all this neat stuff that I wanted to write about, but of course I have since forgot all of it. I really need to start using the voice memo feature of my cell phone to keep little notes so that I can remember. It's always been one of my biggest problems in writing, that I forget all these great ideas. Whenever I'm doing something somewhat boring (work, driving, etc.) my brain is usually going about 100 mph and thinking about lots of other things...unfortunately I forget most of them.

I'll start with a little bit of an update of the last few days.

Friday: I had lunch with WS. After lunch we stopped by Best Buy and they actually had the video card that I was debating about buying in stock. I was pretty shocked, because it should have been sold out. Well, technically they were sold out, but someone (probably an employee) had stashed one behind another card. So, lucky for me...bad for them. I picked up a couple little gifts for Amanda there as well. After lunch and shopping Amanda and I headed to her house. We had debated about staying another night in Walkerton/South Bend, but we decided that we would just head out and go to Amanda's place.

We got to Kentland and went out to dinner. Dinner unfortunately wasn't that great. I had fish and I got some bones in it, so that totally killed the mood. Luckily the mozzarella stick were good so the meal wasn't a complete loss. After dinner we played the game Scattegories. It was the first time that I had played it and it wasn't too bad. I won one, and I think that Amanda won the second.

Saturday: Saturday went by really fast. We had breakfast at the truck stop and after that went to Susan's game. The game was ok...but Susan's coach is terrible. I've been around sports most of my life and I've seen all types of coaches, but she is the worse that I've ever seen. I've never seen a coach belittle and humiliate players before. The lady doesn't coach just yells when something goes wrong. It took her until halfway through the second quarter to wake up and she had quit by 1 minute into the 4th quarter.

See, the thing is...this lady played college basketball a few years ago, so the school corporation just assumes that she has this vast knowledge of the game. Yeah, that's not the case. Very rarely are good players good coaches, and this lady is no exception. I could just go on about this lady for a couple more pages, but it's not worth it...it's only like the 4th game of the year...and they'll be lots more to complain about before the season is over.

After the game we went to Amanda's dad house for dinner. We were there for a couple hours. Amanda wasn't feeling too hot so we didn't stay too long after dinner. She has came down with a really killer cold that is taking it's toll on her. Hopefully it stays away from me, but we'll find out!

Sunday: We woke up and went to breakfast before church. Church wasn't too bad today. After church Amanda headed to work and I met RG for lunch. He was home from OBC on pass for Thanksgiving so it was nice to see him. We had a pretty long lunch and parted ways. I came home and had one of those good lazy days that are all too few. I did clean up a little bit and even managed to cook dinner once Amanda came home. We watched a couple shows while we ate. After we were done eating I ironed as we watched TV. I went ahead and ironed all my dress shirts. I've never done "ironing" in the sense that you sit and do everything that needs to be ironed. I've always simply ironed as I needed an item. I figured that it might be worth a try to just iron a bunch all at once to make it more convenient for when I actually need to wear a shirt.

After TV/food/ironing I played around on the computer some more and am here now. Nothing too exciting. I'm pretty tired, I didn't get to sleep in any days, but that is ok.

This week should be pretty busy. I have drill this weekend to get ready for, so that means stuff to do. It's also the inevitable time of the year when there is shopping, cooking, and decorations. None of the three have been done yet, but maybe we can get one of those done this week. I think that we should be able to pull off our tree this week.

I also want to make some Christmas cookies. I didn't make any last year and I should have. I love Christmas cookies. What is everyone's favorite? I love buckeyes, you know those little chocolate dipped peanut butter balls? Yeah, those are mine. I'm not usually a big sweet eater, but I can eat those all day long. It's strange though...I love about anything made from peanut butter, but really could care less about peanut butter. There are a lot of people that love peanut butter...but it's just ok for me.

I need a haircut pretty bad. My hair is not long by any means, but it's long compared to how I usually have it. Since I need a haircut it means my gray hair is sticking out, and that needs fixed. A nice close cut is usually enough to hide the gray.

Speaking of hair...it is crazy when I look at old pictures of myself with a full head of hair! I couldn't imagine having as much hair on my head as I did for most of my life. That is crazy! I was a gel fiend back in the day! Now, it's nice and short and I don't have to put anything in my hair unless it gets long. I think that Amanda would like for me to have more hair, but oh well. She is happy as long as I don't have it cut so low that she can see scalp.

Oh, before I forget...here is a picture of my niece going airborne!

That's enough for now...remember the question of the day... What is your favorite Christmas cookie?

Black Friday turning into Gray Friday

How is everyone doing today? Hopefully everyone is recovering from stuffing themselves with food yesterday. I ate quite a bit, but not as much as years past. I'm still up north so, this is a remote update. I decided to change my profile picture back for a little bit, but the eye may pop up every once in a while! I still want to find a new picture. It's one of the evil results of being the guy behind the camera...you aren't in many pictures.

Did anyone go out shopping today? I used to always scour the ads, and go out and get some deals the day after Thanksgiving, but not the last two years. The ads just haven't been too hot. I couldn't even force myself to go out and buy something this year. I came close to ordering a video card, but that was online.

I think that the decline in "good" deals is due to the Internet. There are a lot of good deals in the ads, but most of the "deals" are about the same price that I could get them online for. So, the "deals" are mainly there for the non-Internet people. Or, perhaps maybe it's just me and I don't need anything that bad to get up at 4am, stand inline for an hour and brave 10 degree weather for. Who knows, but I kept my butt in bed until work called.

Yep, I couldn't get out of work today, they called and needed some help, so I ended up working remotely for two hours or so. Oh well, it happens.

I'm eating lunch with WS today, we are probably going to go to Hacienda. It's a pretty good tex-mex restaurant in South Bend. They have one of the best wet burritos anywhere. Amanda and the rest of the girls are out doing wedding stuff.

Not a great update, but it has to suffice...I have to get ready for lunch!

**EDIT** 11:24am
So, I'm sitting watching TV and one of those cheesy lawyer commercials comes on. The guy is sitting talking in front of a blue screen and a car driving is in the back ground...the dialogue goes something like this:

"Recently I was driving while my son was in the car behind me. I'm looking in my rearview mirror and suddenly he swerves off the road and hits a pole. His car rolls over numerous times (graphic moving on screen). I get out of my car and run to his as it goes up in flames, inside the car I hear a voice 'I'm ok dad' (show wrecked car). Because my son had his seat belt on his life was saved that day, so we ask you to buckle up."

After watching that I bet that the lawyer was pissed off that he couldn't sue anyone about the crash. His law office is one of those ambulance chasers where they represent you if drink gasoline because there was no warning, or you stick your tongue in a light socket.

After writing this I don't think its as funny/ironic as it was when I saw, but what the heck, I'll keep it anyway's.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day everyone! Hopefully everyone finds themselves in the company of family, friends and good food today! I'll be headed up north in a couple hours (well, NLT 6 or 7). I'm up way later that I had planned, but heck, we can't get everything perfect!

Amanda and I went to another movie at Hollywood Bar and Filmworks tonight. That is like our 3rd movie in 4 days or something like that! Amanda actually saw RENT today, so she is one up on me! The movie we watched today was "Derailed". It was ok, nothing stunning but it wasn't too bad. I've seen a lot worse, but I've seen a lot better. It was pretty much that kind of movie. L and J met us there, and I was hoping to get drinks afterwards, but Amanda was pretty tired so we came home.

When we got home I messed around on the computer and tried to play some computer games, but eventually I just gave up. My video card is a piece of crap and it's messing up when I go to play games. No matter what I do to it I just can't get the darn thing to work right. I've tried so many different drivers, but it is just barely livable. I'm about ready to buy a new one soon. I wonder if there is an Black Friday sales on video cards, it might be worth the line and the cold to get a good deal on one. That was the nice thing about working retail on Black Friday...we always managed to stash the good stuff for ourselves, or have one employee buy a bunch of crap for everyone else. So, just so everyone knows...that's part of the reason why you can't get what you want! Unfortunately, they didn't pay much, so you couldn't buy much!

After giving up on the computer I watched LOST and Prison Break. Both episodes were great! If you don't watch both of those you don't know what you are missing! They are great shows...definitely pick up DVD's of LOST, and Prison Break (when it's available). Now it's pretty late, and I'm tired. I plan on being up by 7am, so I should get to bed!

4 day weekend here I come baby!

2 quick questions...

First, what's everyone think of my new picture?

Second, is my font too small? Anyone want me to use a larger font? I don't usually read my site once I post it, but looking at today it looks like the font is pretty small. Let me know!

Here comes the holidays!

I'm in a really damn good mood right now! I'm in such a good mood, that I'd do back flips if I wouldn't break my damn neck! Lets go over the reasons why..

First, work is going pretty good. I'm a little back logged with my work load, but that's ok. I'm also using my first personal day in 6 months or so on Friday. Thus, I'm going to manage a 4 day weekend, and boy do I need it. I was hoping for a little vacation when I got back from Washington, but that never materialized. So, with when Thanksgiving falls, and the day off on Friday I'll get a couple days off. That's great! I should take the Monday after Christmas off also...but I won't push my luck!

Second reason for the good mood, is that there is some snow in the forecast. Yeah, Amanda will kill me for saying it, but I love snowfalls and snowstorms and all that jazz. I hate the subsequent days after the snowstorms, but I love the snowstorm itself. I absolutely love waking up in the middle of the night every couple hours and peeking out the window and seeing how much snow is on the ground. It's seriously almost as exciting as the night before Christmas. Then, in the morning when you wake everything is covering in this fresh snowfall and just looks so great. The air is clean and crisp with the snow covering everything. Plus, the weather following the snowstorm is generally pretty nice with sun and bright skies.

Third reason for the good mood is that I bought a new watch last night. Nothing too fancy, but I like it. My dressy watch died the other day, and I figured it was a good opportunity to pick up a new watch. The watch that I decided on is a Skagen, it's some company in Denmark. It's titanium case and band with a gun metal face. It's amazingly light because it's made from titanium and looks pretty sharp. Hopefully it holds up because I beat the hell out of watches. Amanda seems to like, she was really shocked by how little it really weighed.

Fourth reason for the good mood is that I'm excited for the holiday weekend. Yeah, I've already talked about this, but that was about having time off...this is about the weekend itself! I'm excited to see family and friends and eat some good food. Family gatherings are entirely too infrequent, so it's nice to see everyone.

Amanda is starting to look more and more at houses. She is really getting excited about being grown up and getting a house. She has been swarming all over floor plans and stuff finding a builder that has plans that she likes. We've found some pretty neat ones...I just can't wait to shut the door on apartment life for good!

I'm not sure how many people on here are big CSI fans, but I am. I watch all the CSI's, but probably enjoy the original cast the most still. Did anyone watch the episode last week, it was part 2 of the 2 part series. Well, it was probably the saddest episode ever and about brought me to tears. Yeah, I had a big sensitive guy moment...it is possible, I'm not always an ass hole.

Speaking of TV, it looks like there is a new episode of LOST tomorrow! Hell yeah! I love that show, unfortunately, Amanda hates it. Too bad, she doesn't know what she is missing...the best show on TV hands down.

Early Xbox fans endure agony before ecstasy | IndyStar.com

They didn't mind the wait -- more than 24 hours in some cases. They could deal with the biting cold and the occasional smattering of rain throughout the night.

Anyone see this? That article just didn't give me a good vibe for some reason. Don't get me wrong, I want an Xbox360, and I would have been in line if I had the money for it right now...but that article just doesn't seem right. First you have my ex-employer acting the exact reason why I could no longer stand working for them...always trying to string every last dime from their customers. Hell, their president said that they don't care about people that only buy the sale stuff from them, and I'm sure that these people fit into that category. They aren't buying all the bells and whistles with their systems and that is where the company makes all their money. They aren't making a dime off of the game system itself, but they will make 30-50% profit off of the accessories (cables, remotes, controls, memory cards), $5-10 a game, and probably $30 on every insurance plan sold. That teenager that saved up the exact money to buy the system did not do anything for the company. Ex-employer, your day is coming...believe me. There is a reason why I've pumped nary a dime since quitting back in '03.

The second thing that really bothers me about this article is the emphasis on these people standing in the rain and the cold, and distraught how they couldn't go to their car and warm up. It's no secret that I have am not fond of people with "will work for food signs" or the aggressive solicitors ("I need money for a bus ticket to see my babies momma", "I need money for gas", etc). If you want money for alcohol or crack just ask me for that...I'm still going to say no, but at least you aren't jacking up your karma lying to everybody. While I do have the disdain for that type of activities, I do realize that there are people that legitimately need assistance. There are probably hundreds of people in Indianapolis sleeping in the cold tonight around the city. They aren't sleeping outside in the cold for a stupid game system. Does the Indy star and it's liberal bias give a damn about that?

Two nights ago when we were downtown to see "Weatherman", Amanda asked me about the blankets that she saw stuffed into the support columns of the Union Station platform. There is wool blankets in there for the homeless to use this time of year. It is damn cold outside, and there is not enough shelters for everyone...it's just a sad reality... This brings me back to the Star. Were they wrong in their article? No, it was news...but did it justify the headlines on the website and on the front page of tomorrows issue? No, it did not. Why did this turn me sour? Who knows...maybe I'm just pissed that I didn't get one!

Ok, that's enough for tonight...this "Old Man" needs to go to bed...after I take my Metemucil, soak my dentures, and put my depends on.

Tuesday, November 22, 2005

Yeah, it's late, but I've just woke up after 5 hours of sleep. I laid down at 8:30 and woke up at 1:30. I think that I'll update Xanga and then go back to bed. So, I really don't have much to update since I didn't have much of an evening.

It looks like we might have some snow and other winter junk the next few days. I guess that it is that time of year again. I have a love-hate relationship with winter. Most of the time I don't mind the snow and the cold. I just get annoyed mainly with how people drive in the bad weather. Yeah, I know...I always get annoyed at how other people drive. Down here in Indy we really get so very little snow compared to back up north...but it might as well be 3 times as much. People down here want to continue driving the same speed in the rain/snow/ice, it doesn't matter to them. Up north the bulk of the people know to slow down or just stay off the damn roads.

Anyone see the news articles about the PA shooting/runaway/being caught in Indiana? I talked about it for a couple days and my prediction that the 14 year old girl wasn't as innocent as everyone thought was true. My how the whole situation has changed in a few short days. Last week on the two killers websites all these people were voicing how the guy was a good Christian and how the girl was a victim. Well, we now know so much differently about that.

The guy, Ludwig, has videos of himself and a friend preparing to do an armed invasion of a house. It was a video right on one of his laptops. Call me crazy, but most good Christian boys don't fantasize about storming into someone's house and shooting it up. They also don't say that they'll have to kill so-and-so because they are sleeping with a 14 year old girl.

After the dad tells Ludwig that he can no longer see his daughter he walks away, Ludwig shoots him in the back...then proceeds to shoot the mom while she sits in a chair. He then goes out in the car and the girl runs after him and announces "Lets get far away from here, get married, and start a new life". Poor little child doesn't have the first clue about anything. If she is not tried as an adult I'm going to be pissed.

Sorry all you supporters of these two...sometimes people do bad things. These two seemed a little whacked out. The parents of the girl were trying to do the right thing and clamping down on what their daughter was doing. I guess that old moniker of the dad cleaning his guns when the boy comes over isn't a bad idea. Are we to the point now where in a couple years when my son/daughter starts dating I'll have to worry about the little bastard shooting me?

Here is a question for ya....why is like 70% of all the dog toys out there squeaky? Seriously, do dogs like squeaking THAT much? Or rather, is it the humans that like the squeak? Thankfully, Amanda and I both dislike squeakiness, and always do the squeak test when we are shopping for toys. You would be surprised how hard it is to actually find squeak-free toys.

Speaking of our animals...the cats still don't know how to take Caden. Zoe (the fat cat) absolutely hates Caden...but she hates everyone except Amanda or me. Zoe treats Caden like she treats most humans...but a fast hiss and a punch. Thankfully she is declawed...otherwise Caden would probably have lost his eyesight. What is strange is that Caden is not the least bit scared of Zoe.

The other cat, Stormie, is a little better with Caden. She doesn't hiss at him, but she doesn't like him either. She'll often sit right outside of his reach and watch, and if he gets too close she'll give him a little punch, but pretty half-hearted. It really surprises me that she hasn't been willing to play with him...we both thought for sure that she would. Who knows...our damn cats never make any sense.

Ok, time to go to bed for the rest of the night now.

Colts are up 45-34 late in the 4th...the season continues in the right direction. This game reminded me of last seasons...all offense but not much defense. Hopefully this offense form continues for the rest of the season.

We are headed in a few minutes to the movies. We are going to go to Hollywood Bar and Filmworks and watch "Weatherman". I'll let everyone know how it is when we get back.

Anyone see this? Al-Zarqawi May Be Among Dead in Iraq Fight - Yahoo! News . Hopefully we see the results of the forensic soon and we can file him along with Husseins kids. It's so fitting that it could possibly happen the day his own family disowns him. If anyone else out here is a news freak like me, they you will probably notice how leery the mainstream media is being in this situation. They are really holding back announcing this until they know for sure. I guess they want to play it safe on this, but they just go crazy over anything else.

Speaking of Iraq, BP should be back in the states in the next few weeks. I'll be glad to see him again, and start spending time with him. I can't believe that he has been gone for over a year now. Well, we are off to the movies!

Decline of the holiday

Mass. Warns Whole Foods on Thanksgiving - Yahoo! News

Many of the state's Puritan-era blue laws, passed in the 1600s to keep colonists at home or in church on Sundays, have been repealed, such as a ban of liquor sales on Sundays. But one that remains in effect requires all stores, except convenience stores and gas stations, to close on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

I'm amazed, a state government actually upholding a law to keep businesses closed, no matter how absurd the law is to some people. I'm sure that I've talked about it on here befor, but the decline in businesses respecting some traditional holidays is attributing to the decline in society. I'll admit, it's convenient to be able to run to the grocery store on Thanksgiving to get the cranberry sauce you forgot, or go to the store Christmas morning to get batteries, but we have gone too far.

Far too many businesses are closed for holidays. It was one of my biggest complaints when working retail...how I'd have to work all the holidays. What is the use of having Labor Day if the only people that have the day off are the people that aren't making crap money? Why not give the day off to the hard working everyday people grinding away making low wages?

I'm so happy now to be able to get holidays off that I would normally have to work. Why our capitalist society feels the need to wring that last dime out of a holiday is beyond me. Last night we ate dinner at Chic Fil A, and it is one of the few companies that appears to respect the holidays. Hell, they aren't even opened on Sunday's. While that my be a little out of the norm for our society, it is something you have to respect. They are losing millions by being closed over 50 Sunday's a year, but I'm sure that the employees appreciate always having at least one day a weekend off.

Another company that does a little extra for it's employees is Menards. They give their employees an extra $2 or so an hour over the weekends. That may only mean an extra $32 a weekend for the employees, but in my eyes it helps to offset the employees working on the weekend. Believe me, working on the weekends is a drag. I don't miss working weekends one little bit. I work one weekend a month doing Army stuff, and that is enough for me. I value the weekends, having time for my family and myself.

Now, I'm not total conservative when it comes to this. I think that the old law Indiana forbidding buying alcohol on Sunday is pretty stupid. What is the big deal if you buy your case of beer on Saturday or Sunday? Oh well, maybe it will change sometime.

Yesterday, Amanda and I watched Saw 2. It wasn't too bad, kind of comedic in a couple places. Somehow seeing people acting stupid just cracks me up inside. It's definitely not a horror movie, it's not designed to scare you...more like just keep you interested. I can't think of the last scary movie that I watched...but it certainly wasn't Saw 2.

Nothing else really excited went on yesterday. E's sister came over, she was having some problems. One of them was her car...her headlights weren't working. Her little switch is bad, and I couldn't get it to work. When she came over, I was laying down to take a nap...I was just dozing off when the doorbell rang. I bet I looked like a raving lunatic when I opened the door.

I went to bed around 12:30 or so last night, so it was good to get a decent nights sleep. This morning we got around and went to church. On the way home we picked up Chipotle and came home and watched Survivor and ate our burritos. I'm not sure what I fee like doing right now...a nap would be nice but I'm not very tired. I know that if I laid down I would go to sleep though. I'm going to stay up and see what happens. I still have to watch Star Wars 3, and I have a ton of TV to watch. Uggg, I just need one extra day to the weekend and everything would get done.

I'm so sick of apartment living...I've been in an apartment since I was like 19. I can't wait until we get a house and I don't have to share walls with someone else. I want a basement, a garage, and plenty of space. Hell, I even want a yard to mow and leaves for Amanda to rake. I think that apartments kind of eat at your soul or something. They take away your individuality since you are forced to conform on so many different things. Your front door looks like everyone else, you can't listen to your music loud, you can't decorate how ever you want, no dogs over XX pounds, pay the pet fee, etc. The list just goes on and on. It's not that the place we live is that bad, we both like it here, but it's just not a house. You know what I mean? I want a white picket fence and neon green shutters...someplace to call my own.

Yesterday I was reading one of the many news sites that I read, and I came across an article that looked good. I thought to myself "I need to talk about that one", but I was tired and didn't worry about marking it and now it's gone. Hopefully I find it, because I don't know what it was about, but it seemed pretty good! Ok, time to get on with the rest of my day.

Cocaine, little kids, and PSP's

Police: Tot swallowed cocaine | IndyStar.com

A 16-month-old boy brought to an emergency room by his parents was placed in the custody of child welfare officials Friday after doctors determined he had swallowed cocaine, Marion County sheriff's deputies said.

What can you really say about this article? The stupidity of parents never seem to surprise me. What the heck went on in that house? So picture this...it's in the morning on Thursday Johnny is out with his little scale, a load of bags, and busy packaging the coke into nice 1 gram packages. He slips up knocks over his glass plate carrying the bulk of the coke. Now, I'm no drug user and I've never done any drugs...but we all know that cocaine is not cheap. Wouldn't you flip out if you spilled coke onto the floor? If you are the distributor, chances are you don't "own" the coke, you just pay your guy after you've got rid of the individual baggies.

Well, the coke is on the floor....so you are probably freaking out. Running around the house cussing and screaming. Do you not notice the little baby walking that awkward 16 month old baby walk ...walking towards your spilt coke? Hrm...Must not.

Well, you obviously have to get the coke out of the carpet, so you run to the garage to get your dust buster...the people you sell too won't mind some fleas, carpet fibers, dust mites, and dirt in there nose candy. So, you come back from the garage, dust buster in hand and see your kid playing in your coke. He turns and gives you that big goofy smile and looks like a fat kid eating a powdered donut...coke is all over his face appearing slightly like Kate Moss in a London night club.

So...here is the variable. Did the dad/mom that was packaging the coke decide to take the kid to the hospital at this point or did they wait until there were effects? Either way...for this story, the other person in the family is working...since it was a Thursday. So Johnny gets on the phone and shouts at Suzzy "Little Mel ate my coke". Oh crap! I bet it was on! Suzzy runs out of work flies home as fast as she can. Then they rush off to the hospital.

This is where I give them credit. They went to the hospital. They could have just stayed home and watch what happened. So, that is at least one positive in this whole situation. Come on people...just say NO! No to giving your kids coke, no to dealing drugs, and no to stupidity!

Ok, on to other things. Yesterday was definitely a busy day on here. I can't believe all the comments yesterday. Hopefully some of the new comers stay around...I'm not always the mean asshole....I'm usually a pretty nice guy.

So, last night Amanda and I went for our usual Friday dinner. We left early last night since we were both famished. We decided to go to Joe's Crabshack. We get there, and sit in smoking since it allowed us to be seated right away. We wait, and we wait, and we wait. All the while I'm getting furious...our menus are closed and the incompetent manager walks by 3 times and doesn't notice us. We were hungry so we almost stayed, but I had enough and we walked out. Bastards...at least they had to re-bus our table since Amanda ate some crackers.

We went to Red Lobster since I still wanted seafood. Amanda was content staying at Joe's...but I wasn't in the mood to be waiting forever...I just wanted my damn beer and an appetizer of calamari and I could care less how long it took to get the meal.

Off to Red Lobster we went. We had to wait 10 minutes or so to get a seat. The only bad thing about the wait was some guy in his 50's shoved the little pager thing into his pants. Yes...into his pants. Amanda saw him and she told me about it. I said "Into his pocket", and she said "No, into the back of his pants". Holy crap...strange ass people!? Who wants to touch a pager that has ass sweat on it? I sure as heck don't. I should have said something to pager-ass, but didn't. Oh well.

We finally get seated, have a waitress right away, get everything perfectly timed. She kept my iced tea full, and was nice. It wasn't that fake TGI Friday's waitress nice either. It was a no BS nice. She ended up getting a fairly large 30 some percent tip. The food was pretty good also, so that helped.

One strange thing about the meal though. When we were in the waiting area, a mom and her kid came in. The kid was probably 14-16 or so and had his nose buried in his PSP (play station portable). I think that he was playing DDR (Dance Dane Revolution...seriously, what is the fun in playing that on a PSP?). He played the entire time we were next to them in the waiting are. They just happened to sit next to us, and the kid played it up until the food came. The mom just sat there, and the kid didn't talk. It had a definite kid visiting his mom for the weekend feel. If my kid did that I would have threw the game across the damn restaurant. It is one thing to play if there is a bunch of people there, but the only other person was his mom. Here is a picture, sorry about the crappy quality.

That was our interesting eating out experience. We came home, watched some TV, and I woke up at 5 in the morning on the couch. I guess the TV we were watching wasn't that god or something.

It's 10am now, and I'm getting hungry, hopefully Amanda wants to go get some breakfast...if not I'm going to have to find something because I'm starved.

Oh, should I take the link to that girls site off my post from yesterday or keep it there?

So, kaela24bball decided to stop by and leave the following comment:

hey just sceen you stopped by my site... next time if your gonna read about my life.. please leave a comment thanks......

That's pretty funny. I've heard of people demanding comments before, but I've never had one show up here before.

At first I couldn't remember who the person was, but my memory won out and I remembered. I went to her site off of a site that calls out fakers (fake moms, fake pregnant teens, fake anorexics, fake celebs, fake girls, etc.). I don't know why she was on that site, frankly I don't care.

So, as I said a couple of points back...I look at a lot of sites, but only leave comments if you or your post offers me something worth commenting about. I don't leave stupid comments like "Yo, just stopped by".

Looking at someone's site does not automatically deem a comment. Yeah, you have a tracker and you know that I was there...big deal. I get a lot of people that stop by everyday, either xanga users or just people from a Google search. These guests are free to read what they like, stay as long or as little as they want. If they want to leave a comment fine, if not I don't care. I'm not going to beg for comments, nor go to their sites demanding a comment. That's absurd and nothing more than a vain attempt at increasing your eprops. It's stupid users like that on here that make 70% of the "featured" sites nothing more than people that post one sentence or two and then receive 100 comments. Sorry, but in my book one sentence does not deserve a comment.

Yes, I think that I have better stuff to say than most of the featured, but I could really care less. I have people read my site, they comment on occasion, and that is fine for me. My site is for me, and if anyone wants to read it I'm appreciative. Heck, back in Mach, April, May I had less than 100 hits a month from people...and I still posted.

So here is my promise to you. Yes, I have a tracker, but no, I'll never go to your page and leave you a comment about not commenting on my site. I use it to find other interesting people on here. I've actually subscribed to people that stopped by.

It reminds me of drivers ed.

I was 15 and in drivers ed...I was sitting in the backseat and we went to make a turn in a guys drive way. All of a sudden, the homeowner comes running out yelling at us...cussing at us. He was total white trash. The drivers ed instructor told the girl driving to drive, but she panicked and didn't know what to do. The white trash guy is yelling at us telling us he is sick of people turning around in his drive way, and the drivers ed instructor is yelling at him telling him we were students. Finally the driver comes out of her daze and is balling. She throws the car into reverse and slams on the gas...flying us into the road and nearly putting us in the ditch. She's crying, drivers ed instructor is apologizing about yelling, white trash is giving us the finger, the two other girls in the back seat are freaked out and I'm there laughing my ass off...just like I'm doing now.

So, while I laugh my ass off, everyone go visit kaela24bball (don't leave any comments) and laugh with me!

Tombstone Mouth

Anyone ever get tombstone mouth? You probably have no idea what I'm talking about. It's a disease that you get when eating Tombstone (or other frozen pizzas that are cooked in the oven). Unlike most diseases it goes away in a couple days, although there is some anguish from the initial outbreak to the end of the infliction.

Still don't have any idea of what I'm talking about do you? Well, have you ever ate that nice hot, steamy, cheesy pizza and burnt the roof of you mouth and/or your gums? Well, I have all to often and it stinks! You bite into that nice pizza and before you are finished with the pizza you notice the roof of your mouth is on fire, and there is what appears to be a blister forming. To rub salt on the wound it hurts for a day or two, and then the skin peels away and you are left with bits of you mouth....in your mouth.

So, anyone ever get tombstone mouth or am I just strange?

The evil Google Toolbar

Amanda put the following comment on my last post:

What is wrong with your post? There are all kinds of weird words in there that aren't really words. What's going on? Are you starting a new language?

Ok...I'm not on crack. I used the Google toolbar to check my spelling, for whatever reason it left all the words still in red (noted that they were not in the dictionary). Well, I ran the spell checker again and then closed out of it...to convert all the words back to black. Well, it shuffled all the non-dictionary words around creating new words... So no, I'm not trying to start my own language, but here are some of the words that it created:

overblogringshael - This is when you spend 3 hours continuously looking at various people's blogs. You are a machine and eventually your eyes start to go numb.

bjerkeyjerkey - Erm...this is a new *technique*. We'll leave it at that. Just say it outloud...it's pretty fun to say.

checokbmanbag - If you see a guy walking down the street with a man bag, this is the process of nudging the person next to you and pointing out the dude with a manbag.

rapelchapsticken - This is if you are spending a lot of time at the top of the rapel tower with the sun and wind pounding you. Eventually you need to get some lip stuff or your lips become extremely chapped.

bmanbagfor - This is the process of shopping for purses for your significant other for the holidays.

thcarmexmattress - This is an extremely rough mattress that causes bed sores. You have to put carmex on your wounds to help them heal.

amanbagslept - The process of sleeping in a sleeping bag.

determineprop - This is the process, of when leaving a comment for someone, when you determine whether to leave them 2 eprops, 1 eprops, 0 eprops, or just a comment.

gomonthersake - This is when you are in the Asian restaurant and order your 4th and 5th round of sake. It is supposed to be "go get me another round of sake" but you say gomonthersake instead. Trust me, the waitress knows what you said.

Manbags, snow, and subscriptions

I'm back from sunny Detroit. I was favoring staying tonight about 70/30, but my class got over with early. So I was presented with the opportunity to beat traffic and make it back to Indy at a reasonable time. It had begun to flurry a little bit and the temperature dropped. I listened to my cautious side and got the heck out of Dodge, errrerrr Detroit. The drive back wasn't too bad...only like 5 hours or so. I stopped right inside the Indiana line and grabbed drinks and snacks.

This truck stop had briefcases for sale. They were a pretty good price...they were like $10 with a $5 mail in rebate. I didn't really stop to look at them too long, but I just couldn't help from thinking about briefcases at a truck stop. My grandfather drove a truck for the majority of his life, and I sure as hell couldn't imagine him with a briefcase. Heck, I can't imagine myself with a briefcase and I work in a damn office. So really, who is the truck stop people targeting with the briefcases? If you are a traveling ____________ (insert occupation here) and you job consisted of a need for briefcase...wouldn't you have one already? So lets go through the situation.

Let's take Joe. Joe is a traveling ______________ he stops at the truck stop to grab a red bull, a thing of beef jerky.

Perhaps they are just an ok manbag. Perhaps the truck drivers of the word are uniting in protest of having to stuff their pockets full of junk while ladies get to carry a purse with compacts, wallets, pens, kleenex, tampons, candy, gum, pictures, keys, spare keys, money, receipts, chapstick, lipstick, kleenex, lip gloss, lip liner, and carmex.eye liner, a pda, a cell phone, 15 different store cards, check book, candy bar, and $3.62 in change. They have had enough and are uniting in the manbag revolution. I know that I sure as hell get tired of:

Left front pocket: Keys (on a carabineer rated for 6800lbs...you never know when you have to rapel), and carmex.

Right front pocket: Cellpdaone and PDA

Left rear pocket: Wallet

If it wasn't such a cultural stereotype I would carry a manbag. It sure heck would be a heck of a lot better for my back, not sitting on a 1 1/2" wallet.

So, that was my drive home. Last night I slept on the hardest bed ever. I think that they just built a mattress out of plywood, threw a mattress pad and a sheet over it and called it a mattress. I sleep on my side and felt like I was beat up when I woke up at 5am. I almost slept in the recliner in the room....it was a lot softer. What is with hotels and hard beds? I think that by having a soft bed you give more options. You allow the guest to either sleep in a soft bed...the bed, or a hard bed....the floor. By providing a hard bed you have cut my sleep options in two.

My class thing wasn't too bad. Nothing spectacular. There is a more advanced course tomorrow and I would have liked to stay for that, but I have to be at work tomorrow to start the install of the program that I had the class on today. I'll see about scheduling the second part soon.

It looks like winter is finally here. That beautiful November weather that we were having is finally gone, and in it's place is a blustery (is that a word?) twenty some degrees and high winds. It was windy as hell on the way home, but that keeps it interesting. My little Mazda3 isn't too bad, it's the semi over correcting that makes it interesting.

Ok...now on to the subscription thing. Here is my process for deciding who I subscribe to:

Step 1: Browse my blogrings and click on numerous people all at once, opening up 30-50 windows at a time.

Step 2: Read the most recent entry or two from the opened sites. If there is something interesting I'll make a comment. I don't make comments like "Hi, eprop back".

Step 3: I start to recognize people that I open up frequently and comment on. If they seem intersting or have a neat blog I do a trial subscription if it is an option.

Step 4: I read my subscriptions every day. This is my real and trial subscriptions.

Step 5: At some point during the 21 days or whatever a trial subscription is I make the determination if the person is interesting or not. If they seem to update regularly and are interesting I'll activate the subscription to a full one. That way the person knows that I'm subscribed and not just some weird stalker that is commenting.

Well, for the past week or so I've been trying to activate some of my trial subscriptions to regular subscriptions. I wasn't sure if it was working or not because I keep seeing the people that I'd activated as trial subscriptions still. I didn't think much of it. Well, today I login and a few of my trials are missing. I'm like WTF!? Where did they go. I go back through my comment history and find the people that are missing, I then activate them as regular subscriptions. I'm then left with another 2 or 3 people still on trial subscriptions, a couple of them are coming close to expiring. I decide that I need to do something about that or I'm going to lose those too. Well, I just delete the trial subscription then go to the persons page and activate a real subscription. Whew, all fixed I think that I found the people that I disappeared, if not I'll stumble across them again.

I'm also at another point in time in my Xanga life. In about 1/2 of my blogrings I'm seeing the same core group of people update regularly. It's the regular updaters that make this fun...not the once a monthers. So, I'm subscribed to the people that I've found interesting on my blogrings...and I'm not seeing anyone new on the blogrings...oh, what to do? I think that I might try a little blogring shuffle and see what happens. I'll probably be dumping a couple of them to find more interesting people...since finding more interesting people is the game.

Well, now that my subscription rationale is updatershe open, I have nothing else. I'm going to go and wake Amanda up (she's taking a nap) and eat some pizza. Amanda will probably want to watch One Tree Hill and oogle over Chad Michael MuOHGODarry for an hour or so. Take it easy.

So, I'm just sitting here in the hotel just chillin'. I really enjoy the fact that so many hotels now offer some form of broadband. It really adds a nice feature to the hotels that previously wasn't there. It used to be AC and free HBO, now it's wifi and showerheads. The hotel that I'm in is owned by Holiday Inn, it's called Candlewood Suites, it seems pretty nice. Has a little kitchenette and everything. Too bad that I'm only here for a day, so that won't be used.

The drive up here wasn't too bad, it was rainy the whole way, but I use that great Rain-X windshield wiper fluid to help with the rain. It was the longest drive that I've had in a while and overall it wasn't too bad. I rotated through Sirius Radio and the audio book...I didn't even turn on the iPod. About 3 hours into the trip I stopped and grabbed something to eat. I ate at Applebees...didn't want fast food. Unfortunately, I hate eating in a restaurant by myself...so that was a bummer. I should have brought my book in with me, because I'm really at a loss at what you do sitting by yourself. I ended up spending most of my time checking news on my cell phone. They had ESPN on the TV, but closed captioning wasn't on, so I couldn't watch that. The only other thing to do was look at people, but you can't really do that either.

My website has been pretty busy today with hits from people searching for that Ludwig kid's website. Nearly 100 people came in, and everyone got the hell out right away. I guess that I should put a picture of a naked women up or something so they stay awhile. Perhaps I should have talked about the whole situation a little more to get the people to stay for a while. I do have a couple of thoughts on the matter.

Well, Ludwig from his website(s) seemed like a fairly typical 18 year old kid (well, except for the part of killing his 14yo girlfriends parents). He talked about pretty normal stuff on his website. He didn't have any of the creepy posts on his blog like that pedophile creep in Idaho, Iowa, or wherever. I believe that if his actions prove true (which it looks like they will) his friends and acquaintances will have to face the sad truth, that they know a murderer. What makes a *normal* kid do that? Beats the hell out of me, but I know that the teenage years are a trying time, and this kid was probably immature for his age, judging by the fact that he was secretly involved with a 14 year old. There is probably nothing more dangerous or unstable than a legal adult that is immature.

Now, I've read a lot of the comments on his page...there seems to be a couple of different categories:

Cat A: This person goes there purely to say something along the lines of "I can't believe you did that" or "Rot in hell" or the always effective "Enjoy getting butt raped in prison". These people meet resistance from Cat B.

Cat B: This person knows or claims to know the kid. They support them and argue with Cat A. They say that he was a good kid. They often blame the girl for everything.

Cat C: These are your God bless types. Enough said.

Cat D: The curious. They only say something like "I saw you on the news, wow."

Basically Cat B and C confuses the hell out of me. Yeah, you know the guy, but damn people, the evidence is there. There would have to be some serious conspiracy theory crap going on by the girl. The girls sister (13yo) said that she saw Ludwig shoot her dad. So for that not to be true that means that the 13yo is in on it.

Cat C is also out there. I believe in God and all that jazz, but damn! This guy most likely shot two people, offer your support and prayers to other peoples, not an *alleged* killer.

Another thing that I'm wondering about, where is Ludwigs family? I've not heard a single mention about where they are, who they are, or what they are thinking? Are they even alive? Did he shoot them also? There silence doesn't look good on his behalf.

How about the fact that they were found on the run...that never looks good. Besides, what were they going to do? I doubt they had a lot of cash with them. It's obvious that he/she were not hardened criminals...who stays in the same easy to spot red Jetta the whole time?
So, yeah, innocent until proven guilty... it will be interesting how the Bonnie and Clyde duo end up.

Motor City here I come

I'm off in a few minutes and just wanted to post since I promised that I would. It's not like the world would stop turning if *gasp* didn't post, but hey, we can think that it would have. I'm about ready to head off on my little solo road trip...just downloading the maps now into my GPS Navigator. My hotel is booked, it's about 10 minutes or so from where my class is at.

I'm still not sure when I'm headed back. Depending what SR is doing, I may stay with him tomorrow night and head back Thursday morning. I may also just head back after the class is over tomorrow. It gets over with about 5pm, so that puts me back in Fishers around 10pm or so. The only hard time that I have to make is a conference call Thursday at 1pm. We'll see what happens!

Maybe I'll go to Canada while I'm there...never been to Canada before...we'll see. Hell, maybe I'll go to the casino and lose my paycheck (just kidding). Speaking of casinos, I really hate them...they always take my money. The casinos should really give me the red carpet treatment when I walk in since I'm nearly guaranteed to lose money and give lots back to the house. I just have the worst gambling luck.

I'm going to be missing a training meeting for the Army tonight, I'm kind of disappointed, I've really been enjoying myself at these meetings...even if we haven't gotten paid for them yet!

Anyone else check out that Ludwig kid from PA and his little girly friends Xanga and Myspace sites? Yeah, the modern day murdering duo. Heaven help that I ever do anything in the news...people love to hammer the posts with useless comments. Amanda, if I am ever in the news please delete this thing! We all know that I believe this is my front porch and that I'll put my boot in someone's ass for treading on it the wrong way, but if I'm not here to do the bootage, I'd just assume lock it all away.

Amanda is almost done with her last rotation before her long break! I think that she is starting to get really excited. It's nice for a couple reasons, but mainly because Caden (our little doggie) will be happy. It's going to be the perfect time to finish his housebreaking and stop the occasional accident. He has been getting better, but he still has problems. He is still a little puppy though, like 3 1/2 months old or so. He is so cute! Everyone loves him. I can't get the little SOB to fetch for anything. He can sit and lay down though, so he is not totally stupid.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Yesterday Amanda and I met with a pastor for a church. Amanda went to church there two weeks ago and liked it, and the guy wanted to meet with us. Everything seemed ok, nothing was really strange. I'll be going there Sunday to get my feelers out for the place and determine whether it is someplace where we'll keep frequenting.

Ok, my map is downloaded and it's time to hit the road. I might stop and pick up a power cord for my iPod, but we'll see. I'm set baby...GPS navigation, iPod, Sirius radio, and an audio book. My hotel has WIFI, so I may post there, but we'll see!

Monday, November 14, 2005

Another day gone by, and where did the time go? Seriously, its like wake up, work, drive home, and sleep. I remember when there used to be an evening, but that seems like decades ago. Who knows...perhaps it is just a big coincidence with the days becoming shorter this time of year.

I really don't know how long/good/worthwhile/intelligible of a post this will be tonight. I feel like crap, mainly my eyes. I feel like my eyeballs are going in and out of focus...kind of like I'm on the verge of a real kick ass headache. I think that a good nights sleep will do wonders, so that is what I'm hoping for tonight. So, in search of the good night's sleep I'm off to see if it helps. I will try to get a morning post in before my drive up to Detroit. Yea for 5 hour car drives. I have my first eve audio book to listen to on the way up.

'Night see you later.

How the Colts saved a life

I'm back from a trip up north, although we nearly didn't make it. We had a super close call outside of Kokomo, a lot closer than Amanda realized. She was in the passenger seat sleeping away, which is unusual for her, because she doesn't normally sleep in the car. She was tired though so I told her to sleep.

I'm just a driving along listening to the Colts game minding my own business. I'm a pretty courteous driver too just FYI...even though I hate other drivers. I have my cruise set at 6x mph and am in the left lane passing a big ass white Dodge truck. I just get around him when I stupid ass semi driver decides to pull into the median. That's all well and good if you are in a car, but not in an 70+ feet long truck. He continues to pull out, all the while I'm in the left lane with the big ass truck next to me. There is a Jeep behind me. I'm in the worst possible situation possible...literally no out.

I think for a split second on what to do, and I decide that I'm going to try to punch it and make it around the semi, and hopefully the truck slows down.

The semi is still pulling out...my foot is mashed against the floor.

My hand is on the horn but it's a stupid Mazda, so it's not very loud.

Amanda wakes up...can't pay any attention to her.

73...

75...

77...God, I should have downshifted into 4th...too late now.

78...The bastard is still pulling out.

79...Turn the wheel to the right.

80...Oh shit who am I going to hit? Semi or white truck?

82...I clear the semi by about a foot, the bastard was still pulling out.

81...I look in my rearview mirror, the white truck is about 5 car lengths back...he must have hit the brakes at the last minute.

79...Cusswords are spoken, Amanda goes back to sleep.

77...Bad thoughts are going through my mind involving semi truck driver and my large maglite flashlight in the back seat.

75...Wow, I'm glad that I wasn't trying to change the radio station or something, if I wasn't listening to the Colts game I would have been channel surfing, damn satellite radio. Thank you Indianapolis.

73...Can't see the truck anymore.

72..

70...

68...

So, that was my close call. It was much closer than I would like. I had brief flashbacks to '99 and hitting the semi on I65. Yeah, me vs semi once before. I am a little better off right now in my Mazda3 with it's advanced safety features, but it's still scary. In '99 I was in a Geo Metro and hydroplaned and slid into the side of the trailer going about 50-55mph. I spun out and slammed into a guard rail in reverse. Pretty effing scary. That song "Summertime Girl" was on the radio and it scares me whenever I hear it in the car now. Luckily Amanda and I were ok from that, and we were ok today, but I don't like close calls. My reckless days are in the past, being a nice mature adult driver should have prevented these close calls but that really isn't' the case.

So, other than soiling my pants (not really) this weekend wasn't too bad. It went by way too fast though. I like my weekends to last a long time, and this weekend flew by! We visited with my aunt, uncle, brother and sister-in-law last night. Today we saw my mom, dad, sister, and niece. It was a short(ish) trip up north, but it was better than nothing. We should have headed up earlier Saturday, but that is ok...can't change it now.

I'm feeling like crap right now though. I've been perpetually plugged up the last couple weeks and I'm beginning to go crazy. It really sucks that the meth head bastard druggie sob abusers have forced the law abiding citizens to jump through hoops to buy sudafed. Since sudafed is harder to buy now than beer or cigarettes, I now have to take the new PE or whatever it is. Unfortunately it doesn't work that good. So, since it sucks I'm sitting her wearing breathright nasal strips. Yes, that's right...those little tan things that were all the rage in the late 90's for football players. I bought a package of them a couple weeks ago to see if it would help my snoring, but they work wonders for breathing. Like magic, you put them on and you can breathe, it's amazing what an extra 1/32 of an inch can do to your nasal passageways.

Ok, that's it for now, I might update later on, but my thumb is cramping up...

Crime....

Let me just ask, what the hell is going on in the city right now? The last two weeks or so have been full of home invasions, shootings, and robberies. Seriously...it's beginning to feel like I'm living in Detroit (sorry SR). What is the cause of all this drama? Beats the hell out of me...all that I know is that I work in a less than opportunistic area. The area is not that bad as far a bad parts of town go, but I probably wouldn't live over there. What is strange about Indianapolis is how quickly bad turns to good.

The quality of life changes so fast its really absurd. You can go from run down dilapidated housing to nice well kept old homes in a period of a two blocks. It's pretty strange though, during the late 80's early 90's all the people were leaving downtown for the suburbs, now people want to live downtown. There has been quite a revival downtown. That doesn't mean the suburbs aren't growing. They are, there is huge growth outside of the I-465 corridor, I just am intrigued by the downtown revival. Take for example Fall Creek Place.
The area of town a decade ago was the wild wild near north side. It was dangerous and there was hardly and property value to speak of. Well, the city of Indianapolis had an ingenious plan, the would rehabilitate the area yet keep the same feel of the area. Usually when this rehabilitation is done it means bulldoze everything and build condos. Not in this case. What they did was bulldoze the crap, and keep the best. They moved whole houses to new lots They paid people to leave or gave them hefty discounts to stay. They also built new houses in the same architectural style of the old houses. They improved the road, put in new sidewalks, formed a Homeowners Association. The people that have stayed are enjoying property values two to three times what they were a few years ago. If you drive through the area today you think that it is a well kept old neighborhood, you would never guess what it was like 10 years ago.

So, you now have this really nice bubble in the downtown area. That is all well and good, but it is a bubble. You literally stray one block outside of the rehabbed area and it's back to the wild wild near north side. So strange how it is... Oh well, I still love Indy!

Last night I saw the movie Jarhead...I thought that it wasn't very good. I'll be reviewing it for my little review site. GP, MM and myself ate at Texas Roadhouse last night, it was yummy! I love a good steak. I also had a baked sweet potato, I'm really starting to like those, but I still love my loaded baked potato!

This morning I changed the oil in my car, it was a little overdue, so it was good to get it done. It's such a pain in the ass to do on my car because I need to take a cowling off as well as use a torque wrench. I was also planning on rotating my tires, but I don't have a socket large enough for the nuts, so I'll have to do that later. I also need to pick up a new air filter.

I'm thinking about either making a turkey sandwich for lunch, or going to Chipotle. I'm thinking that I'll just make the sandwich since I'm feeling lazy. I'm not sure what time we will be leaving to go north, probably 4-5 or so. It will be nice to see family tomorrow. It's been over a month.

So yesterday was Veterans Day. Did you thank a vet? I sure hope so. The average age of veterans that have been in combat is getting lower and lower. It is no longer people that are 50-70+ years old, there are 18 and 19 year olds out there.

It looks like it's nearly official....al Quida was behind the bombing in Jordan. That really just goes to show the mentality of them. They did nothing but strengthen the resolve of the Jordanian people to stop terrorism. I have nothing against Islam, I believe that it is a religion as right and proper as any other religion out there...it is just this extreme jihadist Islam that is so out of line.

Wow, this has been a post that is all over the place...that's what I get for going into this without a clear idea of what I was going to write about...oh well. This is like a smorgasbord post...a little bit for everyone.

Honorable Discharge

Where does the week go? Tomorrow is already Friday...not like I'm complaining or anything, but this week flew by! Today was a busy day at work, but nothing particular stood out. I did get lunch at Penn Station and it was pretty good. I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu...it was most excellent (and free!). I'd get it again. Free lunches...a definite fringe benefit of work.

Speaking of free food and work, in December we have our Christmas party. That should be fun/interesting, since I've never been to a company party before. My only idea going into the night is from what I see in movies...like the opening scenes of Die Hard. Do people really drink excessively and make fools of themselves. I'd say yes...anytime there is exuberant amounts of alcohol (probably at the companies expense) there is going to be some drama. There probably won't be too much since there is only a handful of people going...so that is probably a good thing.

I also have the annual National Guard holiday meal at the beginning of the month. This will be my first time at one of these as an officer. So, that means that I'll be dragging Amanda along with me (sorry Amanda!). I also have to give a brief to the family members that are in attendance, so that should be fun. I'm also going to cook a ham for the event, so that is something new...I've never cooked a Ham before...might have to call mom or grandma about how to do it, or I could just do what I always do, just look it up on the Internet.

A couple weeks ago I bought tickets to Santa Slam. This will be the third year in a row that Amanda and I are going to it. This year the lineup isn't as good as it has been in the past, but it should still be a fun night. I had my days all messed up and didn't get 4th row seats again, but we are still in the front section. Hell, what am I complaining about...at least Clay Aiken is not there!

This morning I was hard at work (seriously!) and the phone rang, it was Amanda. She said there was a problem...and after a few seconds she announced that she was disposing of some dog droppings and flushed it down. She said that a few minutes (yes, minutes) later she heard water and went in to see an inch of water on the bathroom floor!!! Yikes, what a mess. She didn't know what to do, she had already called maintenance and tied the float up to stop the water (good thinking Amanda, did I show you that trick?). She had no idea how to get all the water up since there was a lot. I told her to use the mop in the garage. She got it cleaned up (unsure of the difficulty). Well, my bathroom is kind of a mess still, but I'm not upset with her, she was busy working on a presentation for school and didn't really need all the extra drama in the mornings when she was already on a pretty tight schedule.

Guess what I got in the mail today? Nope, not that! I got a package from the military department of Indiana. It was the states version of a DD214 and a certificate saying that I'm honorably discharged from the Army. LOL, that's hilarious! So, I guess they discharged me at 2359 on Aug 10th, and then I commissioned a day or two after that. So, I was technically a civilian for a day or so! So, now I have a nice little certificate to go along with my other certificates. Also, after looking over the DD214 it appears that I'm authorized a couple rewards that I didn't think that I was authorized. I had questions about whether I could wear them or not, and the answer is yes. This packet put the closure on my enlisted time, almost exactly 5 1/2 years.

I really should do some cleaning...or at least some picking up. I don't really want to though....but I should! I also need to take a load of trash over the compactor. Uggg, the trash dilemma of this place...it is one sore spot for me. I hate the garbage situation, it really is the worse of anyplace that I have ever lived. Why in the heck do they only have one dumpster for all these residents? Everyone hates it....not to mention it is one thing that they strategically don't mention when the show you the place. I just cannot wait to get a real house and not have to put up with apartment BS. Hopefully a little over a year from now we will be moving into our own house and putting apartment far into out past!

I'm out.

Computing Safety

Just sent this e-mail off to everyone at work, thought that I would share it with everyone on here also.

E-mail and Computer Safety

Here are some tips to help keep your e-mail and computer safe and secure at home and at work:

  1. Get a lot of SPAM? Send a lot of forwards? The two are related.
    1. If you must send a forward delete all the previous e-mail addresses. SPAMers just love getting an e-mail full of nice juicy working e-mail addresses.
    2. Remember one other thing… Bill Gates isn’t going to give a thousand dollars by forwarding an e-mail, you won’t claim riches from a Nigerian prince, and your hamster won’t die if you don’t forward that e-mail to 15 people in 2.56 seconds.
    3. If you send a forward to numerous people, send it Bcc (blind carbon copy) this keeps all the recipients e-mail address secret.
  2. Are you getting e-mail from yourself? If you didn’t e-mail yourself, don’t open it! This cannot be stressed enough.
  3. Attachments – So, you just got an attachment and you want to open it up…first ask yourself a few questions:
    1. Do you know the person that sent it to you?
    2. Does the attachment have a unique name or is it simply “password.exe” or “WeeklyReport”. If it seems like a generic name e-mail, or better yet call the person that sent it to you to see what is going on. There are nasty little boogers out there called worms that take over people’s e-mail and send bad stuff to everyone in their address book…you open that attachment and everyone in your address book will now be bombarded by you.
    3. Is the attachment a file that ends in .exe ? If it is you probably don’t want to open it….this is a program and if you open it then it will run which could be very bad!
    4. Use common sense…don’t open an attachment that says “password” or something like that!
  4. “Phishing” - So, your (bank, paypal, credit card, etc) company has just sent you an e-mail saying that they need to update your records. Guess what, it is not your (bank, paypal, credit card, etc). It is someone spoofing a legitimate e-mail address so that they can get your personal information to steal your identity, bank information, or credit card numbers. Remember the golden rule, if you don’t request it, ignore it. Oh, and you did read that correctly, you can really make an e-mail appear to be from someone else. If you are unsure call your (bank, paypal, credit card, etc) and clarify.
  5. If something appears too good to be true, than it probably is. Be careful bidding on auctions or buying things from a store that has deals that are unbelievable.
  6. Popups -
    1. The demise of many a computer! These are evil little buggers that just love to replicate, but there is some things you can do. First, never click IN a popup, always click the little X to the top right of the popup window.
    2. If you click the little box that says “Close Window” then you just clicked the popup…it’s the equivalent of leaving your car unlocked with a million dollars sitting on the drivers seat…you’ve just lost!
    3. If you have popups appearing for no reason then you probably have spyware. Get a reliable antispyware program and run it. I wish you luck…many of the current spyware programs out there will severely mess up your computer.
    4. If you have a popup that says something along the lines of “Your computer is infected with spyware, click here to get rid of it”. Please go back to 6b, it just wants to install spyware on your system!
  7. Toolbars and other “helpful” programs
    1. Don’t go toolbar crazy…mywebsearch, hotbar, and many others are bad…they may infect your computer with more spyware.
    2. Don’t install anything from a popwindow!
    3. If you install a “free” program that you found, read the EULA (End User License Agreement) to see what it says. Many “free” programs make their money by getting paid to install spyware on your system.

Any other questions ask…ultimately just use common sense!

Early Memories

Shaq sells shoes more people can afford | IndyStar.com

"She was crying so much, I reached in my pocket and handed her some money," O'Neal said of the Orlando, Fla., woman. But she didn't want money. Instead, she begged O'Neal: "When is somebody going to make some shoes affordable?" That's how O'Neal, with the Heat since 2004, formed his Shaq and Dunkman brand shoes, which retail for less than $40. Today's athlete signature shoes run $90 to $125.

That is pretty cool Shaq. It's not really something that you see a lot of people do...lower their brand association to have a cheaper product that they are endorsing. I don't know whether I'm just over cynical or what, but there has to be something else to this. I spent a few minutes looking for what price the shoe company is paying Shaq for this contract. I was unable to find out how much he is making, but the Dunkman's were the best selling basketball shoe at 6 million pairs, so they sold roughly $240 million in shoes. Even if they are only making 30% margin, that is still $72 million in profit. So, just because the shoe is cheap, it doesn't mean that Shaq isn't making a killing off of them.

Back when I was younger (think 5th, 6th, 7th grades) I was all about Jordan's. Well, I have not bought an athletes brand of tennis shoes since probably 7th or 8th grade. I just can't plunk down the huge sums of cash for shoes that really are no better than anything else. I am usually content buying Asics, New Balance, or Saucony. The last two years I've went through a ton of running shoes, and probably bought more than I really need since I found some hella deals last spring. Anymore though, I am wearing dress(ish) shoes or my Oakley pseudo skater shoes most of the time. I very rarely wear tennis shoes out and about anymore.

My past few days posts have been pretty depressing/negative/sad...so it's time to talk about better stuff. If you know me in real life then you know that I love to tell stories, so it probably wouldn't hurt to tell some on here. Granted, if you started from my first posts in February and worked your way up to here, then you would have a pretty good idea of who I am, but you really wouldn't know what made me who I am. So, I might start regularly telling stories/memories of when I'm younger. Hell, I can even use some of them 40 years from now when I start to write my memoirs! Uh oh...no one will want to buy my memoir if I've had the memories online for years. Oh well...

Ok...so lets start at the beginning...my earliest memory. I've spent a lot of time trying to think of my earliest memory. I can think of a lot of stuff that happened when I was younger, but the hard part is trying to find something to benchmark just how early that memory is. Yeah, talk about a pain in the butt! How do you put a time to a memory that occurred before you really had the concept of time? Well, by a stroke of luck I believe that I have my earliest memory narrowed down, although there may be earlier memories, this one is the oldest that I can get for sure date for...so here it is...my first memory.

It's strange the little things that we remember, little details such as where I was standing, where my parents were standing...what the floor looked like...but don't remember some things. I am in the kitchen in my first house on Bittersweet Rd in Mishawaka, it is somewhere between September 1981 and February 1982, so I'm between 2 to 2 1/2 years old. My parents are standing next to each other right in front of me. I'm standing next to the dishwasher, which is actually taller than I am. I remember looking at the floor, it was this fake red brick linoleum stuff. It was arranged by two bricks at right angles to one brick. It was pretty ugly, but all the rage around 1980.

My parents asked me if I would like to have a little brother or sister and if I would like to be a big brother. I can't remember who asked me, whether it was mom or dad....so, that leads me to how I know when it was. My brother Brad was born in June of '82, and my mom was not showing yet (at least not in the eyes of a 2 year old). I was born in August of '79...so by going off of Brad's birthday, then he was conceived in September of '81, placing me from roughly 2 years old. So...that is my earliest memory.

What's your earliest memory?

I wonder at what age it become normal to start to remember long term? I'm sure that I could find it out in a few minutes of searching online, but I'm not really feeling too searchy right now. I think that I'm going to watch some TV and call it a night. This work week is nearly over and the weekend will soon be here. I think that I'm going to head north for the weekend and visit with family. It's been a while since I've seen them, and it is always nice to visit. Next week it looks like I may go up to Detroit for two days or so for a class. I think that I'm going to drive, but I should be able to split the drive by stopping at home there and back. While I'm up there I'll visit with SR, haven't seen him in a while and there is no use being that close to a friend and not doing anything together.

Ok, off to watch some TV, drink some apple cider, and eat some Halloween candy that I have due to the lack of kiddies last week.

In awe...

Kansas City Star | 11/05/2005 | Foes of Phelps fight ire with ire

Phelps’ church says the deaths are the penance of a nation too accommodating of homosexuality or, alternatively, that the deaths of U.S. servicemen and woman are divine retaliation for a small bomb that caused about $1,800 damage in 1995 outside the Topeka home of one of Phelps’ daughters.

I'm furious right now...totally at a loss of words. This guy pisses me off on so many different levels. Lets list them now....

1) He is a homophobe. Yeah, I'm straight, but I believe that people have a right to do what they like with who they are with. If a Jew wants to date a Muslim, that's fine with me. If a black guy wants to date a white girl that's find with me. If a guy wants to date another guy that's fine with me. I'm a tolerant person living in a semi-tolerant society which is great. We are a tolerant society, and I'm a tolerant person, but I have no tolerance for this guy.

2) I am a soldier. Funeral are sacred places...let alone a funeral for a soldier that laid down his life for his/her country. Protesting them and saying that God killed them because of ________________(insert anti- gay/abortion rhetoric here).

3) This guy is twisting this whole mess into a personal vendetta against society. He feels that since a bomb went off by his daughters place years ago that IED's are Gods way of revenge? Ok, that makes a lot of sense. That's like me trying to explain quantum theory to a preschooler.

I could just go on and on about this. I'll also put this out now...if any of you ________________(insert anti- gay/abortion rhetoric here) post to my comments like you have done on others peoples Xanga page, I will promptly delete them. There is no freedom of speech on my front porch, and this is my front porch. So just like I would shove my boot up your ass if you came to my door, I'll do it here.

Well, that stupid site requires registration, so I went ahead and put the full article on here...

Bikers shield mourners from protesters

Knight Ridder Newspapers

One side rides motorcycles to fight what they believe is an abuse of free speech. The other side uses words and posters that, for some, seem to stretch the boundaries of First Amendment freedoms, but to them are their God-given right.

Terry "Darkhorse" Houck's voice breaks with emotion when he talks about the time he spent as a Vietnam combat soldier.

Same goes for Carvel "Wild Bill" Logan.

It's been decades since the two served in the U.S. military. But there's pride in their voices when they talk about being veterans.

In August, Houck, Logan and Cregg "Bronco" Hansen became outraged when they heard that Fred Phelps and members of his Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., were planning to picket and protest U.S. soldiers' funerals.

So they formed the Patriot Guard, a grassroots organization that's quickly gaining momentum.

Composed of veterans' motorcycles groups, motorcycle enthusiasts, Christian motorcycle groups and people who simply consider themselves patriots, the group provides a human barrier at funerals to protect mourners from hearing and seeing the protesters.

If requested, they'll even rev their motorcycles' engines to drown out chants.

"It is a low, vulgar thing what these folks are doing," Logan said. "They may or may not be protected by the First Amendment, but to me it borders on treason."

Shirley Phelps-Roper, attorney for Westboro Baptist Church, disagrees.

"These are the most unpatriotic bimbos," Phelps-Roper said. "They stand at funerals and say to us this guy died for your right to do this is almost laughable. ... God gave us these rights."

Westboro Baptist Church members began protesting at soldiers' funerals in June, claiming that God is killing the soldiers with improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, in retaliation for a plastic bomb set off in front of Phelps-Roper in 1995.

Hansen said the Patriot Guard would like to see laws changed either prohibiting people from protesting funerals or restricting the area or hours where protesters can be heard.

"We're getting e-mails from people in Texas and Indiana, all over, who are going to go to these protest funerals," Hansen said. "The word is out. Our group is going to get bigger and bigger until it stops. It's going to take everybody to get laws changed."

Phelps-Roper said the laws have already been changed.

"You are permitted to keep us off the sidewalk in front," Phelps-Roper said. "You don't like what you are seeing? The Supreme Court recommends a solution - avert your eyes. ... Sidewalks are held in trust by local units of government for robust public debate."

Logan says it's not all about First Amendment rights.

"I don't want to take away their rights," he said. "We all have those rights. But there should be a boundary, and they have crossed over it."

So far, the riders have only attended three funerals. The first was Staff Sgt. John Dole's funeral in Chelsea, Okla., on Oct. 11; 40 riders from Kansas participated. The second funeral was for Army Spc. Lucas Frantz in Tonganoxie, Kan., on Oct. 17; 120 riders attended that one.

Last week, more than 150 cyclists participated at the funeral for Sgt. Evan Parker in South Haven, Kan.

"Not all of us are veterans, but we are all patriotic citizens," Houck said. "When you see somebody out picketing a military funeral, you take it personal. ... How could anybody do such a despicable, horrible thing to grieving family members who've just lost a son or daughter?"

Hansen said the group always checks with local law enforcement before attending a funeral.

"We don't want to interrupt any services. We are not counter-protesting anything," Hansen said. "But we are there to honor the soldier and protect the family from the chanting and signs."

At funerals, the group takes their motorcycles as close to law enforcement officials as they can. Many of the cycles sport American flags. The riders then turn their backs to the protesters.

For the Oklahoma funeral, the group revved their cycles' engines; in Tonganoxie, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance; and in South Haven, they recited the pledge and revved their engines.

Logan said it's been years since he swore to protect his country and, at 65, he hasn't quit yet.

"We've let these people get such a toehold," he said. "They apparently are a fairly powerful group of people but are just filled with hate. The more we can do to bring this to the public's attention, and get enough people to agree with us, then maybe we can change things."

Foes of Phelps fight ire with ire

The Kansas City Star

SOUTH HAVEN, Kan. — The Phelps family hoisted the same old laminated gay-bashing placards.

They made their same tired chants taking glee in a soldier’s death.

Another funeral, another round of pickets from the minichurch fixated on homosexuality.

Yet now that the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr. has moved on to flinging epithets at military martyrs, a few politicians have begun trying to silence him. Their success will depend on how carefully they mind free speech as they write their laws.

In the meantime, noise is met with noise.

Whenever the few protesters from Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church shouted or sang Wednesday in South Haven, the earth trembled.

Any time they spoke up, the wrists of biker veterans twisted on dozens of throttles to strike the thundering chords of Honda and Harley-Davidson.

More than 200 bikers had made themselves into a chrome-and-black leather barrier. The 10 anti-gay picketers stood on one side, drowned out by the noise. Mourners arriving for the funeral of Army Sgt. Evan Parker passed on the other side.

“We’re supporting the family of a fallen soldier,” yelled Don Barr of American Legion Post 138 of Caney. “And we’re telling these jokers” — he jutted a thumb in the direction of Phelps’ picketers — “to get lost.”

Were the protesters concerned that the spectacle might upset a grieving family?

“No,” Fred Phelps Jr., said. His 75-year-old father is increasingly absent from the picketing. “The (soldier’s) family has made a public spectacle of things. There’s nothing private here.”

People have hoped for years that the obsessively anti-gay protesters would go away. Yet the Phelps clan travels the country, and even overseas, to protest anything it deems not hostile enough to homosexuality. (The Kansas City Star, and the funerals of former employees, have been picketed at times.)

Most recently, the peculiar Phelps logic has shifted the pickets to funerals of Americans killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Legislators in two states are pushing laws to bar protests at funerals. At least one Tennessee county has adopted a resolution to keep picketers away from mourners.

That has triggered warnings of a First Amendment showdown. While Phelps family’s message strikes many people as offensive (one of their signs reads “Thank God For Dead Soldiers”), it is decidedly political.

In 1995, a federal judge threw out a Kansas law that prohibited picketing outside funerals because it was too vague. With Phelps in mind, legislators quickly adopted a law specifically barring pickets an hour before and two hours after a funeral. (Missouri has no law regulating picketing at funerals.)

The Kansas law bars pickets only near a funeral, and in planning for Wednesday’s demonstration, Sumner County Attorney Shawn DeJarnett looked at lower-court rulings that said the state law effectively allows people to protest from across the street.

“We came to the conclusion to avoid confrontation” and decided against arrests, DeJarnett said. Officials elsewhere have taken the same approach.

The U.S. Supreme Court repeatedly has upheld laws that establish protest-free buffer zones around abortion clinics — laws that specify the distances and apply to everyone.

Before memorial services in 1998 for Matthew Shepard, a man singled out for a brutal robbery and murder because he was gay, officials in Casper, Wyo., adopted a 50-foot no-protest zone. The action earned them a letter from Phelps that described it as an “ideal arrangement.”

But in September 1998, the city of Lincoln, Neb., passed an ordinance in response to protesters who staked out a church attended by a doctor who provides abortions. The courts tossed out the law saying that in protecting children from upsetting messages the ordinance also kept those messages away from adults.

Tim Butz, a Vietnam veteran and executive director of the Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said he thinks similar efforts to muzzle the Phelps protests will be doomed.

“It may be obnoxious as can be,” said Butz. But “we don’t just protect popular speech in this country.”

One legal argument, however, holds that the right law could keep Phelps from tossing insults at funeral processions.

“The regulation has to be content-neutral,” said Michael Fenner, a First Amendment expert at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

Fenner said a law might stand up if it is related only to time and place of funeral pickets — limiting protests to within so many feet from a service or so many hours before or after a service begins. Even if lawmakers obviously intend to push away Phelps, Fenner said, the law might survive. He noted a 1960s law aimed at stopping protesters from burning their draft cards by requiring young men to always carry the cards.

“Everybody understood this was a way to jail people who burned their draft card,” Fenner said. “It didn’t matter. It stood up.”

Likewise, Fenner said laws aimed at Phelps might withstand court challenges precisely because of whom they are intended to control.

“Judges are humans,” he said. “They’re not going to have any sympathy for this guy.”

Oklahoma Rep. Paul Wesselhoft makes clear his sympathies lie with military families. A retired Army chaplain, Wesselhoft has introduced a bill that would ban any protest within 500 feet of a funeral site from two hours before the service starts until two hours after it is over. Violators would face a mandatory 30 days in jail.

“This comes when a family is in its most vulnerable state,” Wesselhoft said of the protests. “We can protect them a little without trampling free speech.”

Clay County, Tenn., adopted a ban on picketing funerals, and Indiana state Sen. Brent Steele has drafted similar legislation.

“In my family, if somebody had done that at one of our services, it wouldn’t have been pretty,” Steele said. “No family at their lowest emotional ebb should be put into this trick box of (being provoked into) clocking these guys and then getting sued.”

For years, the Phelps protesters stuck to waving placards at the funerals of people who died of AIDS or harassing public officials in Topeka and elsewhere who dared condemn them.

“For our folks, the shock value has mostly worn off,” said Ron Schlittler, deputy executive director of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. “The answer to abuse of freedom of speech is for other people to speak up more vigorously.”

Vanda Neely, a doughnut shop employee who lives in South Haven, said of Phelps, “I think this bunch needs to go home. They’re not making any friends.”

Rather, they draw regular confrontations with American Legion bikers.

Bill Logan of Wichita was at his fourth funeral to counter the picketing. Each time, the veterans check with police and the family of the deceased to make sure they are welcome, Logan said.

“It’s the least we can do,” he said.

Inside the South Haven High School gymnasium, Sgt. Parker’s family and friends recalled an energetic and competitive 25-year-old father of two who died in Germany a few days after a roadside bomb went off near Balad, Iraq.

“He was not a victim,” Brig. Gen. Vern Miyagi said. “He was an American hero.”

Outside, men such as “Grizzly” Bob Jeter, a 51-year-old Army veteran from Wichita, stood vigil.

“If those losers are going to be somewhere,” Jeter said of the protesters, “there will be a whole lot more of us.”
